Peru asks Democrats to stop opposition to accord

While the free-trade accord signed by the U.S. and Peru languishes in Congress bogged down by demands made by the Democrats, President Alan Garcia says his country is making every effort to persuade them them to enable the measure to pass.

Opposition leader Humala charged with rebellion

Accused of helping to mastermind the siege, which was led by his brother Antauro, Peruvian opposition leader Ollanta Humala has been charged with rebellion. He remains free on bail but is not allowed to leave Peru.

Sirens, church bells and confettie were used at the stroke of noon Thursday to alert Peruvians to synchronize their clocks and watches in order to promote punctuality. President Garcia feels that lateness, consider by Peruvians to be quaint, feels it's a horrible, dreadful, harmful custom.
