Senior Communist official visits Peru

With the largest Chinese community in the region, Peru was one of the first South American countries to establish diplomatic ties with China. This was cemented by the visit of a senior Chinese Communist Party member to Lima this week.

Disputed bridge to Inca site opened for backpackers

Despite strong protestations by environmentalists and others a highly disputed route to the famed Inca ruins has been opened. The bridge built over a turbulent river opens another path to the famed tourist site for backpackers.

Mining company fears violence from local populace

With residents strenuously opposing the mining operations in many parts of Peru, a London mining group says that relations between the mines and the populace must be drastically improved or violence could result.

New mine owners say Peru's copper output will increase

Jose Marun, CEO of Anglo-Swiss mining group Xstratawho, who bought Tintaya in the middle of 2006, said that Peru's Tintaya copper mine sees production rising 5 percent to 121,000 tonnes in 2007.

Paulson lauds free-trade proposal with Peru
