Disputed bridge to Inca site opened for backpackers

Despite strong protestations by environmentalists and others a highly disputed route to the famed Inca ruins has been opened. The bridge built over a turbulent river opens another path to the famed tourist site for backpackers.

Protecting the Inca Trail

A few years ago the Peruvian government began enforcing strict limits on the number of people allowed on the famous Inca Trail. Right now, only 500 people a day may enter — about 200 tourists and 300 guides and porters.

Mayor's bridge will be a disaster

The bridge built by a Peruvian mayor leading to Machu Picchu, Peru's Inca citadel, has brought warnings that it will wreck the archaeological site and open a route for drug smugglers.
